Water Fight on the Farm

Posted on

Here is a drawing Kirsty did a few months ago of a gun fight with her brother Aidan.

I like the motion of the projectiles and the cute animals at the bottom

Interpretations

Animals by Numbers

A few months ago, Kirsty was learning her numbers and how to write them.

This picture came about after some improvisation on the numbers 3 & 4.

Copy of “Junks at Night”

Posted on

We have a picture hanging in our lounge that I bought last time I was in Hong Kong for about HK$100. It’s one of those paintings where the frame cost more than the canvas, but I like the painting because it is easy to imagine the scene it creates.

About 1 month ago, Kirsty decided she would make  a copy of the painting. You can see her effort just below:

I think it is a very good effort for a 4 year old and it mostly captures the various goings on of the painting in their right places. Unfortunately it was all outlined in a light blue texta and that makes it difficult to clearly appreciate the picture and also the colouring in was only followed through for a small part (under the right junk).Because of these reasons, after scanning the picture to the computer, Kirsty and I began to choose colours to digitally ‘colour in’ her picture by PhotoShop’s paintbucket tool. You can see the final result here which is closer to what Kirsty imagined when she first began the drawing.

When colouring in we had an unexpected result in that with the junk on the right, Kirsty ‘paintbucketed’ some of the outline of the boat in brown by mistake – but we really liked the result so we left it that way.

For reference you can see the original picture here:

Finally I have put all 3 pictures together in a gallery for comparison below:

Mermaid

Posted on

This is another of my favourite drawings that Kirsty has done so far. The mermaid looks very friendly under the water and I like the baby fish following the mother fish on the left. On the right is an airpipe with bubbles coming out (I’m not sure if she realises it, but she drew the reflections on the bubbles to ensure they look ‘bubbly’).

Kirsty still hasn’t watched Disney’s The Little Mermaid yet, I’m thinking that once she has then the next mermaid she draws will have red hair.

Expert Analysis on Kirsty’s Drawings

Posted on

Kirsty recently recieved some feedback on her artistic ability from Mr. Boaz Wimmer from Roshida - an expert on child drawings and analysis (although seemingly more focused on the skill of translating the drawings of a child into a reflection of their personal development and other such psycho-analytical musings.)

You can see what he wrote here in full:

Hi, first I would like to open by saying that your child’s drawings are very unique and represent a drawing level which is more appropriate to age 12. The line quality in her drawings, her creativity, accuracy and structure all represent he…r high abilities and knowledge of social rules. We see from her drawings that she is socially aware, as she grasps small details of her reality. She has very high cognitive ability and it appears that she is mature enough to learn how to read & write. Although she has good communication skills with adults, we would recommend observing the extent to which she behaves childishly and enjoys playing her games freely. Good luck, Boaz Wimmer. www.roshida.com

This pretty much confirms what I knew all along in that although I personally find it quite debatable that Kirsty’s artwork is as high a standard as that of a 12 year old, she truly has an ability far beyond her young age. This strengthens my resolve to ensure she gets the opportunity to do all the art she wants and encourage her through all her endeavours.

Kirsty the Princess & Mummy the Queen

Posted on

According to Kirsty, she is the princess out the front and she is holding flowers and throwing petals for Queen Mummy. Please note that this is NOT  a wedding, however by coincidence this was drawn not too long after Kate and William had a lovely day out at Westminster.

Girl with Sheep in the Snow

Posted on

When I saw this for the first time, I thought this is a masterpiece for a 4 year old! Kirsty doesn’t seem to think it is any more or less special than any of her other pieces but gave the following comment: “The girl’s foot is stuck in the snow. That’s why you can only see one shoe.”

I like this piece for a number of reasons. 1. This is a picture drawn of a person from behind (not normally done by children or Kirsty) and 2. the whole setting still feels very wintry and white.

Apparently this picture was drawn by Kirsty after watching something on TV. She got inspiration, went into her room and then came out with this. The colouring in happened over a couple of days afterwards.

Prince & Princess – 干杯!

This picture is simply a prince toasting a princess and drinking wine.

Why

Posted on

This picture Kirsty calls ‘Why’ because of how the girl is holding her hands out. I noticed through this picture a few firsts with Kirsty’s drawing. Her grass has some depth, she drew clouds, a beauty spot (where did she get that idea from?) and I just love the sun.
